In his presentation, he explained the progress of his work associated with the PAI project he has at our University.
Our professor and researcher at the Research and Postgraduate Institute of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Marco Mellado, participated in the Latin American Conference of Chemistry (CLAQ), representing the Research group in Medical and Bioinorganic Chemistry QMEDBIN of the Institute of Research and Postgraduate Studies from the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Central University.
On this occasion, he presented his work "Synthesis, crystalline molecular structure, photophysical and chemosensory properties of 4-(4dimethylaminophenyl)-6-(4-fluorophenyl)-pyrimidine". He showed a part of his research linked to the Academy Grant project financed by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID).
The main idea of Dr. Mellado's project focuses on using the pyrimidine family's optical properties (fluorescence) of heterocyclic compounds and their ability to act as an optical sensor of metal cations involved in the development and evolution of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
Dr. Mellado stated that "the development of fluorescence-based methodologies is a powerful tool that could allow an eventual early diagnosis of this type of disease using techniques that are easy-to-interpret, of rapid-analysis, inexpensive (compared to other analytical techniques) and non-destructive.”
